“Shouldn’t I be going with you? Isn’t that what an alpha-mate is supposed to do?” I looked at Bram from across the living room. He was tucking a few things into a satchel that he slipped over his head, settling the strap to sit diagonally across his chest.

“It’s not.”

He didn’t look happy, but I didn’t think he was unhappy with me. He and the enforcers had returned shortly after Peyton and I had delivered our eggs to Sadie in the kitchen. He’d filled us in on finding Phil and the confrontation with the werecats. Logically, I knew I wouldn’t be any help going with him to their camp, but I still didn’t like the thought of him going without me.

“Matty.” Bram walked to the couch and settled on the edge of the cushions. He held out his hands, beckoning me forward. I went to him, standing between his spread knees and resting my hands on his shoulders. Sitting down, the top of his head still came to my nose. “Unfortunately, mated pairs, especially alpha pairs, often get separated in duty. In this case, I’ll lead the enforcers to the cat’s camp and then to Brownsburg to take Phil’s body to Charlie. And you’ll hold the fort, so to speak.”

Sliding my hands back, I tangled my fingers in the back of his hair and bent until my forehead was pressed to his. “I’m sorry about your friend.”

He let out a big breath, strong arms wrapping firmly around my hips. “So am I. Phil was a cautious man. I can’t imagine what he saw that made him land. If there was trouble, he was close enough it would have only taken minutes for him to get here and raise the alarm. It just doesn’t make sense.”

I didn’t know what to say, so I offered comfort the only way I could. Stepping closer, I bent further and pressed kisses against his nose and his lips. “You’ll find out who did it and see that your friend gets a proper burial.”

“Yes, I will.” He kissed me again, lingering for a moment. “Then I’m coming back home to you.”

“Please be careful.” Our breath was warm in the small space between our faces. I didn’t want to let him go, but I knew I had to. If this pit of dread in my stomach was any indication, there was no way I’d be walking away from this man at the end of two weeks, or ever again.

“I will.” Keeping his arms secure around my hips, he picked me up as he stood. My head almost brushed the ceiling. As he loosened his arms, I started to slide down his body, making sure to land another kiss before my feet hit the floor.

“Cyder is going to stay here. As my second, he’s got the best knowledge of how to keep the territory running smoothly. Stick close to him and Elias, okay? I know you and Peyton seem to be getting along well, but I need her with me.
